Red Hong Yi
Name: Hong Yi (moniker: Red)
How she got started: After graduating with a Master in Architecture from the University of Melbourne, Red moved to Shanghai for a career in architecture. Inspired by her surroundings and its abundance of materials, she completed her first unconventional work: a portrait of Chinese artist Ai Weiwei made entirely out of sunflower seeds. Honing her knack of creating masterpieces of art using everyday, unconventional materials, she uploaded videos of her work online, which went viral. She became a full-time artist in January 2013.
Notable achievements: Red won several awards in the arts as well as architecture fields before she became a household name. After turning to art full time, she has been featured in major international publications, including Wall Street Journal and TIME, and appeared as a speaker in many conferences on the topics of creativity and innovation. Most recently, she was recognised with the ASEAN Outstanding Business Artist Award in 2015.
