How he got started: Karl worked at numerous fashion houses throughout his career. He started as Pierre Balmain's assistant after winning a design competition in 1955, and subsequently worked on haute couture collections at Jean Patou and Tiziani before he successfully launched his career at Chloe at 1964, where his Spring 1973 collection received rave reviews. In between his stint at Chloe, he has also joined Fendi in 1967, and Chanel in 1983 as their creative director (to this day), and he was behind the latter brand's famous interlocked CC monograph. He currently lives in a nine-room Parisian apartment with his beloved cat, Choupette, which is a celebrity on its own.

Notable achievements: In 2010, he received the Fashion Visionary Award at New York Fashion Week; a year later, he was awarded the Gordon Parks Foundation Award-celebrating his achievement as a designer, photographer and filmmaker; in 2015, he received the Outstanding Achievement Award at the annual British Fashion Awards; and in July this year, Karl was awarded the La Medaille Grand Vermeil de la Ville award, which is Paris' highest honour.
