Not shying away from a subject that is typically (but really shouldn’t be) considered taboo, artist Ivan Lam approached the complex theme of female blood, meaning vaginal and uterine blood loss, and turned it into conceptual art in his latest project titled Hymen. See how he depicts the passage from childhood to womanhood using just three object and material types.

7 April, Valuna Vortex Art Experience @ RAW Art Space
Valuna is a collaboration between Naoto Vava K. from Japan (tabla, kalimba, electronics, throat singing, dance) and Soluna from France (voice, butoh, calligraphy), where both artists bring their unique art forms together in a spiritual, universal and energetic performance. There’ll be a butoh dance workshop earlier in the day too.

10 – 24 April, Forgotten Beauty by Tan Wei Kheng @ Richard Koh Fine Art
Intrigued by ancient practices and tribal culture, Tan Wei Kheng forged a relationship with the living tribes of the interior jungles through constant visits and engagement over the years. In Forgotten Beauty, Tan presents 17 intimate portraits (one of them pictured above) that realistically capture the strength and vigour of the elderly and respected of tribes that he encountered in Sarawak.

26 – 29 April, DNA Reunion Project @ DPAC
DNA stands for d’Next Artist Project, a project launched by DPAC in 2014 as a free platform for local emerging artists to create and perform. This year, past DNA participants are brought back for the Reunion Project, where they’ll perform five selected works that relates to issues of human nature and self-resonance.

28 April, Film Screening: Jogho by U-Wei Haji Saari @ Ilham Gallery
If you haven’t had the chance to watch U-Wei Haji Saari’s award-winning Jogho (1997), why not catch it at this special screening? Based on the novel Juara by S. Othman Kelantan, the story revolves around Mamat, a Kelantanese who lives among the bull-fighting Malay community of Southern Thailand.

Showcasing contemporary art from the Golden Peninsula in collaboration with MAIIAM Contemporary Art Museum, Chiang Mai, Patani Semasa features works of art as well as cultural representations of the ‘Patani Region’ from 27 artists-both locals and those engaged with issues relevant to the area in question- a kaleidoscope of different perspectives, methodologies, and responses developed throughout 13 years of experiences.
