3 May – 1 July, Seen @ Wei-Ling Gallery

This exhibition marks a breakthrough for both Wei-Ling Gallery and the contemporary Malaysian art scene, bringing together 10 leading Malaysian and renowned international artists to showcase their visual and activist projects—from documentary and photography to conceptual practice; appropriation of censored imagery to re-contextualization of leaked footage. The artist line-up Ahmet Öğüt (Turkey), Roger Ballen (USA), Heather Dewey-Hagborg (USA), as well as local artists Anurendra Jegadeva and Ivan Lam.

5 – 19 May, Artists in Residency from Taiwan @ RAW Art Space

As part of an exchange project between Taiwan’s Waley Art and RAW Art Space, two Taiwanese artists-in-residency will be showcasing solo exhibitions here in KL this month, namely Chou Ming-Yi (mixed media) with The Future Archelogy of Dogs, and Teng Wen-Hsin (digital image/video art), who is presenting Transcendental Conversation. 8 – 31 May, Optimism is Ridiculous by Natee Utarit @ National Visual Arts Gallery

An exhibition by leading contemporary Thai artist Natee Utarit, Optimism is Ridiculous features a selection of 25 artwork from the series—animal paintings by the artist that highlights social contexts and other understandings of the outside world by contrasting Asian-ness against a post-colonial product-based inspiration.This exhibition is co-presented by the National Visual Arts Gallery and Richard Koh Fine Art.

10 – 13 May, Dato’ Seri @ KLPac

A Malay adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth by the late Tan Sri Muhammad Ali Hashim and Omar Ali, this localised version of the classic play is set in the early 1960s in a reimagined Malaya, following the struggle – both in thought and action – of Dato’ DiKajang, as he deals with the choices he makes, and the consequences that follow suit.

Showcasing contemporary art from the Golden Peninsula in collaboration with MAIIAM Contemporary Art Museum, Chiang Mai, Patani Semasa features works of art as well as cultural representations of the ‘Patani Region’ from 27 artists-both locals and those engaged with issues relevant to the area in question- a kaleidoscope of different perspectives, methodologies, and responses developed throughout 13 years of experiences.
