When in Penang, give the Escape adventure theme park a go
An alternative attraction
Three things came to mind when I was planning what to do for our #BuroRoadTrip to Penang: Food, food, and food. Of course, there are also the heritage buildings to see and street art to Instagram, as Dato' Nicol David gave us a mini guide of things to do and see, as well as her favourite eating spots on the island. But what I was looking for was something different and my Google search answered me with an adventure theme park called Escape Adventureplay in Teluk Bahang.
While it's labelled as a theme park, don't expect any attractions with high tech machinery such as rollercoasters and the like. Escape's aim is to take you back to your childhood for traditional fun that has easily been left behind in today's modern cityscape; but essentially, it also promotes physical wellness in an outside environment.
With over 20 attractions within the park, ranging from Flying Lemur (slightly similar to Flying Fox as you zip across a long cable in between trees above ground) to Kite Flyer (imagine literally being on a kite flying in the wind) to Atan's Leap (inspired by the ol' days of climbing atop trees and using it as launch pad to jump into the water), one can easily spend a whole day here.
Based on our visit, we would recommend going for Monkey Business first as this tends to attract quite a queue; with half the reason being it's a challenging rope course that takes up to 15 to 20 minutes, depending on your fear. However, you can easily spend some time on this attraction alone as it has two courses per level, and there are three levels with varying heights.
If you really want the full experience of the great outdoors, a new facility/activity called Base Camp opened in April where you can revisit (or visit, for any first timers) the joys of camping. It's located within the fenced area of the grounds, guarded 24 hours a day; and each tent comes with its own toilet and shower, a BBQ pit and locker/gadget charging station.
