1. Bray Bakery, Taman U Thant

Carb-lovers, take note of the latest specialty bakery and coffee place in town—Bray Bakery at Menara See Hoy Chan. Launched by Dr Jeanette Chua’s Altruist Group, this new establishment aims to serve great coffee and breads while educating its customers and doing good for society. ‘Bray’ means to grind, crush or pound, which represents how the brand’s specialty coffee is brayed before extraction and how fine grains are brayed atop its loaves before baking. While the bakery is still having a bake sale to test out new recipes, its Sourdough Awakening Buns and Basil Foccacia Sourdough Loaf appear to be bestsellers so far. The former is infused with specialty coffee and is said to taste like a cross between Swedish cardamom buns and the Malaysian-favourite Rotiboy for a unique blend with a hint of nostalgia!

2. BeanGood, Cheras

Have you BeanGood today? If not, perhaps treating yourself to some comfort food or desserts from this new, minimalist eatery may lift your spirits. Take your pick from rice, pasta and meat-based dishes for your main meal, or check out the assortment of tarts for dessert. You can also mix and match two halves of a six-inch tart (options include Korean Strawberry Crème Tart and Yuzu Lemon Meringue Pie, to name a few), but diehard durian addicts will probably want the whole Musang King Durian Tart to themselves. Top your order off with a cup of specialty coffee or cold brew for the complete teatime treat!

It’s good vibes only at this sunny new café in Sri Petaling, as you can tell by its name. (Fun fact: Xixi is an expression for laughter or a silly, naïve giggle in Mandarin.) Defined by vivid orange interiors and a cute smiley face on its logo, the dessert shop specialises in croffles, snacks, cold desserts, and comfort food that promises to leave you smiling. Among the highlights on its menu include Salted Egg Lava Croissant, Tiramisu Croffle, and Longan Osmanthus dessert. There’s also a decent selection of poke bowls, rice dishes and croissant sets for those looking for savoury options or heavier meals.

4. Hey Peach, Bangsar South

The vegan movement is growing in KL and Hey Peach is the latest establishment driving it forward. It’s also the plant-based sister restaurant of Parklife, both of which are located in one of the buzziest creative, sociocultural hubs in the city, RexKL. What makes this new vegan spot a standout though, is that fruits are the main star of its menu. Instead of salad bowls and/or plant-based meats, expect colourful fruit bowls, rolls, chia seed puddings, and fruit toasts featuring every colour of the rainbow. That said, you can still get your veggies with options such as Signature Hummus, Roasted Pumpkin and Mixed Organic Quinoa Salad.

5. Googoo Gaagaa, Pandan Indah

No, this café isn’t named after some cute plush toys. Instead, its owners found inspiration from one of Queen’s popular songs (brownie points for guessing which one). Calling Pandan Indah its home, Googoo Gaagaa instantly commands attention with its bright red and orange walls, fluorescent paintings, and unusual furniture and art décor pieces that give the space a unique identity. As for the menu, expect an eclectic mix of burgers, sandwiches, and quesadillas, as well as a range of coffee made from its own ‘Ultimate House Blend’.

6. Iki Omakase, Imbi

Iki opened its doors in April to welcome fans of omakase to indulge in its specialty Edomae sushi, made using fresh, seasonal ingredients from Japan. Although the FMCO has put a halt on the full omakase experience—where customers would be treated to the chef’s creations amidst its warm, modern interiors that evoke the landscape of Tokyo’s hidden gems—the restaurant is currently offering dons (rice dishes), somen noodles, and the chef’s selection of sushi for takeaway and delivery. For the ultimate treat, don’t miss the karafuru sets—featuring a selection of premium sashimi, finely crafted nigiri sushi, and the dessert of the day, housed within a traditional wooden lacquered bento box.

Launched just a week ago in the middle of FMCO, The Dough Factory is another new artisan bakery and brunch spot to check out. From kouign-amann to plain and flavoured croissants to Danish pastry, the bakery section has something for both sweet tooths and those with savoury preferences. Meanwhile, the food menu consists of dishes such as Crab Benedict, Buttermilk Fried Chicken Burger, Chilli Crab Pasta and Seasonal Mushroom. While you’re at it, why not complete your meal with your choice of chocolate or coffee and a slice of cake?
