LFW SS20: 4 Upcoming London-based designers you should be taking note of

The youngest out of all the fashion weeks, London is a buzzing capital of young and burgeoning talent in one of the most diverse cities in the world. Having seen the birth of Kate Moss, Alexander McQueen and Naomi Campbell’s careers, it’s safe to say that London Fashion Week is a steady platform for fashion talent. Ahead, four new and upcoming names that have made a promising start.

Charlotte Knowles

Founded by Charlotte Knowles and Alexandre Arsenault in 2017, two graduates of Central Saint Martins. The south London-based brand designs for a “strong and confident” woman with their nostalgic yet futuristic designs, most notably their bustier corsets, reimagined in modern fabrications like puffer and nylon. You may recognise their design on Bella Hadid when she was dressed in their Skinn top and dress (as a skirt) at the recent MTV VMAs 2019.

Jamie Wei Huang

A graduate from Central Saint Martins with a background in fine art, Jamie Wei Huang strongly believes in “self-expression through details and materials” with her creations, and puts a lot of thought into the process of how her pieces are made. Her aesthetic is punchy, sporty and young, juxtaposed with refined fabrication details.

Katie Ann McGuigan

The Irish-born designer studied Fashion Design at the University of Westminster, before cutting her teeth in London at McQ by Alexander McQueen and in New York with Marc Jacobs. Her work is cheerful, resonating with bright and fun colours, and striking graphic prints. She is heavily inspired by the “aesthetic and values of international subcultures”, specifically the environment and cultural factors that draw communities together.

Mimi Wade

Having graduated from Central Saint Martins specialising in Fashion Print, Mimi Wade’s made her London Fashion Week debut in 2016 showcasing a collection of intricately hand painted leather party dresses. Her current work has internet gen girl written all over it with babydoll, Lolita vibes and throwback, cult movie posters printed on feminine silhouettes.
