Uniqlo U Fall 2017: Reinvented wardrobe basics with an innovative spin
Uniqlo is giving us a few good reasons to look forward to the month of September. Apart from the highly anticipated JW Anderson collaboration (dropping this September 22nd), another collection we can't wait to get our hands on is Uniqlo U Fall/Winter 2017. Artistic Director Christophe Lemaire shows us how fashion innovation can be integrated with everyday essentials—but not without flair.
Marking the third official collection from the Uniqlo U design team at the Uniqlo Paris Research & Development Center, this range aims to "make clothing an ideal expression of its wearer," with items catered to both men and women alongside accessories. At the Fall/Winter 2017 presentation in New York City, we caught a glimpse of a few standout pieces from the collection, including a vivid red, seamless Merino dress with a mock neck. The beauty of it lies in its fluid silhouette—the ribbing of its A-line form follows the body contours in a flattering manner. This dress was created with 3D U-Knit, a new form of three-dimensional knitting technique employed by Uniqlo in a joint venture with Shima Seiki Mfg., a leading Japanese manufacturer of knitting machines.
"There are certain things that 3D machines can only produce, including draping and A-line silhouettes. But when we are talking about creating a perfect knit, using 3D is almost a must." – Yuki Katsuta, Head of Research and Design, Uniqlo
This knitting technique incorporates Wholegarment technology for an improved fit and comfort—special machines are used to product knitwear in a three-dimensional form in one entire piece with zero seams in tow. While Wholegarment has actually been adopted by luxury fashion houses for their knitwear, this ingenious technology changes the forefront of knitwear for Uniqlo, allowing designers to broaden their horizons with achieving a multitude of designs without boundaries. Alongside that, consumers can now explore a range of quality knitwear at affordable prices. Uniqlo U F/W17 collection offers five 3D U-Knit pieces: three dresses, one women's sweater and one skirt.
This season also sees the introduction of a new technology developed with fiber and textile corporation Toray that allows for an increased heat retention within a fabric. Available in men's and women's seamless down track jackets, the double-weave polyster on the exterior makes for fewer number of stitches, thus allowing the jacket to retain more heat. A noteworthy point is the lightness and streamlined fit of the jacket that makes it versatile enough to be worn in the inside. Speaking of jackets, other outstanding additions to the lineup include Blocktech outerwear pieces, such as women's trench coat and men's coat and mods coat—all perfect for rainy climates thanks to its breathability and windproof and waterproof matte cotton surface.
