Fashion designer Kate Spade found dead at 55
Kate Spade, New York fashion designer and entrepreneur, was 55. According to a law enforcement official, she hanged herself with a scarf in an apparent suicide and was found dead in her Park Avenue apartment at 10:20am local time by her housekeeper. Spade leaves behind her design legacy comprising of more than 100 retail shops and outlet stores in USA alongside more than 175 stores across the globe.
Born Katherine Brosnahan in 1962, Spade was most recognised for her preppy chic handbag designs that were a favourite stateside. The entrepreneur was formerly an accessories editor at Mademoiselle magazine before the launch of her label. Along with her husband Andy Spade, she kickstarted her namesake brand in the early '90s after realising that there was a lack of 'functional bags' at that era. The Spades built an empire that later on encompassed ready-to-wear and accessories, only to sell their company in 2007 to focus on raising a family. Last year, the firm was bought by Coach in a deal worth $2.4 billion (RM9.5 billion).
