New York Fashion Week SS17: Highlights of Day 2
Flirty and fun
Perhaps the most anticipated spectacle of day 2 New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2017, Tommy Hilfiger's collaboration with It-girl Gigi Hadid was a fun-filled affair of all sorts. Set in "Tommy Pier" a la carnival style with hot dog stands, a 40-feet ferris wheel, and two pop up stores in tow, the Tommy x Gigi collection was debuted alongside the label's own SS16 collection—all presented by 72 models including Hadid. The aesthetic barely strayed from the house's nautical-influenced signature, and if anything it had a sporty youthful element punctuated by military jackets, leather jeans, and oversized hoodies and sweatshirts that one can imagine Hadid herself wearing.
If Tommy Hilfiger's show veered towards the line of audacity and fanfare, Jason Wu's pared back, intimate show was the contrary. With only 250 guests in attendance for his presentation, Wu's new collection exuded a sophisticated and rather contemporary veneer that sought refuge in new materials (a foil-like one was a standout) and plenty of flowers, all inspired by the work of artist Ugo Rondinon. The cold-shoulder silhouette remained a favourite, and several tulle dresses sported floral embroideries that were breathtaking as they were refreshing.
