LOOKBOOK: Alexander McQueen SS22 runway

For Alexander McQueen’s first runway show since the pandemic, Creative Director Sarah Burton took guests atop the 10-story parking garage at London’s Tobacco Docks to present her storm-chasing Spring/Summer 2022 show. The latest collection, inspired by the dramatic weather of the capital, could have only debuted in the house’s birthplace. Having spent the past year in lockdown, Burton rediscovered her love for the British city: “We moved from the water––and the mud on the banks of the Thames––to the sky and the ever-changing, all-encompassing magnificence that represents. The artwork for the prints in this collection was shot from the rooftops of the studio where we are lucky enough to have the most incredible views of the city.” From clear blue skies to the most turbulent ones, Burton found the idea of the McQueen woman being a storm chaser, enticed by the sense of mystery and excitement that makes up part of the beauty of nature. The collection itself was a fusion of elegance and punk translated across sleek tailoring accentuated by zips and biker references, while tulle corset dresses were paired with chunky leather boots and chains. Closing the show, Naomi Campbell walked out in a cropped bejewelled blazer matched with a layered waterfall skirt and gem-encrusted hosiery––all out gothic glamour that McQueen has always been known for.
