The best of LFW AW19 day 1: Alexa Chung and Mary Katrantzou
Women in charge
Who: Alexa Chung presented her second on-schedule show this season.
Where: A continuation from the Spring/Summer 2019 collection, the brand continues its Americana groove, with a collection inspired by America's West Coast.
The low-down: Taking inspiration from strong women who go off the grid, the It-girl says "it's about finding solace in a community of women and how powerful that can be. It's time to celebrate the power of femininity and acknowledge that all the attributes traditionally associated with women aren't weaknesses." Prairie dresses—a favourite of Alexa's—were elevated with strong shoulders, and some layered under chic tailored blazers. Paired with embroidered scallop-hem skirt, oversized velvet outerwear were cinched at the waist with an obi belt (the next back-in-trend accessory to sport maybe?), and pleated leather with satin pants that resulted in a structured-yet-fluid silhouette. All in all, one thing's for sure: The Alexa Chung girl will go off the radar stylishly.
Buro loves: We'll take any excuse to wear our pyjamas out, and Alexa Chung's take—a satin floral-print pyjamas set worn with a vinyl trench coat and turtleneck—will be pinned on our winter style moodboard.
Who: Jimmy Choo's heels and pumps complemented Mary Katrantzou's head-turning Autumn/Winter 2019.
The low-down: The Greek designer is still riding high a year after the brand celebrated its 10th anniversary, sending 37 equally attention-grabbing ensembles that warranted a double or triple take. Influenced by the classical elements such as earth, water, air and fire, the looks were comprised of almost every single shade of colour, from one bold monochrome hue to a gorgeous swirl of the rainbow. Accompanying the eye-catching shades, are feathers and ruffles that were used in abundance, some intentionally shielding the lips of the models, adding that mysterious allure. For something more streamlined, find a scale-like sequinned embroidered dress that beautifully shapes the body, and a black-and-white giraffe-print get-up, complete with cascading ruffles down the side of the asymmetric look.
Buro loves: The colourful closing look is worth unleashing our inner magpie for—just imagine how beautiful it'll sway with every move!
