A race against racism, ‘Shining a Light’ goes international

On the evening of 17 June this year, nine people perished in an act of racial prejudice, at the hand of a gunman who stormed the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina during a prayer service. A grave event that continues to haunt not just the Charleston community, but its national and global observers alike, many are still continuing to pick up the pieces.

Armed with a message of racial unity, Shining a Light: A Concert for Progress on Race in America takes to the stage of The Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, California on 18 November. Fueled by the response of the fatal event that took place in Charleston, the concert kicks off A&E Network’s worldwide campaign to tackle issues of racism while promoting unity and progress on racial equity. Broadcasting on an international stage, the concert will be presented to a wider audience as it will also air on Lifetime and A&E Network from 21 November to 15 December.

An all-star lineup of performances is also set to support Shining a Light with a variety of music genres and names, including Zac Brown Band, Eric Church, Jamie Foxx, Rhiannon Giddens, Tori Kelly, John Legend, Miguel, Pink, Jill Scott, Sia, Bruce Springsteen, Sting, and Pharrell Williams. The concert will also witness a special series of never before seen duets that focus on creating reconciliation and positive change across communities around the world.

The concert benefits the Fund for Progress on Race in America, which is powered by United Way Worldwide. The fund will support efforts to address racism and bias through public policy change, individual innovation and community mobilisation, while providing support to Mother Emanuel A.M.E. Church in South Carolina and the broader A.M.E Denomination.

The concert airs on 28 November, Saturday 9pm on Lifetime (Astro Ch 709) in Asia. Tickets for the 18 November Los Angeles concert are available at AXS.com and shineauditorium.com
