Buro 24/7 Exclusive: Icona Pop and Colby Smith for Make Up For Ever
Swedish girl group Icona Pop—comprising of Caroline Hjelt and Aino Jawo—is known for their catchy dance tracks and uninhibited creativity when it comes to a range of beauty looks. This season, Make Up For Ever's artistic collaboration with the dynamic duo has culminated in an array of stage performances using the brand's new Artist Rouge lipstick collection. Patented with a colour technology that grinds colour pigments thrice to reduce it to micro-fine particles, the new Artist Rouge Lipsticks have a heightened radiance of colour and ability to reflect light easily. The collection is available in Artist Rouge Crème and Matte, boasting an 8-hour and 10-hour wear respectively thanks to nourishing sunflower seed and Candelilla oils. This collaboration also sees the pair's personal signatures on two limited-edition Artist Rouge lipsticks.
Both Hjelt and Jawo along with their makeup artist Colby Smith spill all in an exclusive interivew below—find out what they think of Make Up For Ever's new collection and their must-have beauty essentials when they are on tour:
Tell us more about why you both decided to go with creamy dark blue and matte red lipsticks for the Artist Rouge collection.
Caroline: I'm a big fan of red lips—it's classic, always in style and bold at the time! We use makeup to express ourselves on and off stage and there are so many shades from Artist Rouge collection to play with. My favourite is the Artist Rouge hot red M401.
Aino: I like a lot of colours; I like very dark colours but also neutral brownish red. It depends on what kind of mood I am in. Blue is more edgy, if I want to feel cool and a little more dark. Blue is the new thing!
What is your favorite on-stage makeup look?
We like to keep it pretty natural but it's always fun to add a lipstick and a splash of colours. The great thing about Artist Rouge is that it's already a long-lasting product with great colour payoff and colour intensity when we apply it. When we are on stage, dancing, sweating, we can trust that Artist Rouge will stay on for hours and not dry off.
How did the collaboration with Make Up For Ever happen?
The brand fell in love with the creativity and the energy of our Emergency music video, they also loved the song, and our music really inspired them for the Artist Rouge campaign. That's why we decided to do a new version of the Emergency video together using the Artist Rouge lipsticks. Artist franchise is all about colours, transformation and we are using makeup to define ourselves as artists so it was the perfect collaboration.
How do you think Icona Pop's music and personality translate to Make Up For Ever's artistry and products?
Makeup is so important for us when we are on stage, to do something fun for people. You can become a superwoman with just some blush and a black lipstick. We express ourselves through music—but also through how we dress and how we wear our makeup. The brand is perfect for us because it's edgy and cool, plus there are so many different colours to play with.
What are some beauty products you both can't live without, especially when you're on tour?
When we are touring and traveling, it's so important for us to take care of ourselves and our skin. Artist Rouge Lipsticks, highlighter and something hydrating for the lips. Then we are good to go! We like to use Make Up For Ever's Mist & Fix for the whole face for its long lasting effect. We use Make Up For Ever's Sens'Eyes when we remove our makeup. It's light, non-greasy and easy to bring everywhere.
What is one beauty trend that you're embarrassed to say that you've tried?
Caroline: I'm not ashamed with any trends we have tried because we believe it's all about expressing ourselves everyday. It's better to say never say never because we never know what would be the next trend
Aino: I totally agree, I could probably say that some looks I've tried are ugly now but they would probably be amazing in ten years.
What is one beauty trick to getting makeup to stay on especially during on-stage performances?
Colby: Waterproof-ing everything! I love mixing Make Up For Ever Aqua Seal in all my cream and powder shadows to really get the product to stay and not crease. When it comes to the lips, Aqua Liner all over the lip creates a perfect base. If the lipstick starts to come off, you still have that lip pencil down underneath.
How would you recommend using the Aino's dark blue lipstick (#C603) from the Artist Rouge collection?
Colby: I would say go for it. Have fun with the colour. Makeup isn't permanent and should be fun. If you want a softer way to use it, perhaps mix it into your favourite red lipstick like M401 and create a gorgeous fall berry colour.
Tell us your inspiration or creative vision behind Icona Pop's campaign video.
Colby: Be bold. I wanted to show a range of the colours and really show that makeup is fun and shouldn't be taken so serious. Be loud, be cool, and be bold!
Make Up For Ever Artist Rouge collection is available in all Make Up For Ever stores, counters and Sephora stores nationwide.
