Richard Mille and NTPT introduces gold with composite materials in two timepieces

For the first time ever, Richard Mille teams up with North Thin Ply Technology (NTPT) to present two new materials in two women’s models from the Swiss watchmaking brand. The Gold Quartz-TPT and Gold NTPT carbon will be introduced exclusively to the RM 07-01 and the RM 037.

This isn’t the first time that Richard Mille and NTPT has worked together—the brand has used NTPT carbon and Quartz-TPT in cases and mainplates of its timpeieces, enabling NTPT to achieve major progress in inalterability and shock-resistance. One outstanding point to note is that these composite materials have extreme physical properties, making them particularly difficult to machine. Hence, both Richard Mille and NTPT have spent a significant amount of time to develop new machining programmes and researching cutting tools for carbon and quartz.

The NTPT technology is based on the principle of inserting layers of Quartz-TPT or NTPT carbon at a 45° angle and alternating with dozens of gold leaf layers that are less than 10 microns thick. Gold proved to be a tricky material for both NTPT and Richard Mille engineers to ensure it was fused correctly with carbon and quartz. The gradient of golden tones of the timepieces creates a unique play of light, thanks to the contours of the case as well. The watches come in satin-brushed 5N red-gold case-band with polished pillars, a dial set with hundreds of diamonds and a centre in either mother-of-pearl or black onyx.
