Review: Where in the galaxy does the Samsung Galaxy C9 Pro stand?

From the moment of unboxing, the Samsung Galaxy C9 Pro is a stunner. Its 6-inch Full HD Super AMOLED screen housed within a sexy full-metal unibody shows that sometimes, it does boil down to a matter of size—and how size does matter. Noticeably larger than the 5.7-inch Note 7 that came to a premature conclusion and the 5.8-inch current flagship, the Galaxy Edge 8; this device easily qualifies under the reemerging phablet category. Despite the substantial size, its (6.9mm thick, 188g light) lithe physique and ergonomic shape felt surprising natural in hand.

Samsung lauds the Galaxy C9 Pro as a high-spec smartphone geared towards true performance seekers. So, how does this mid-tier entry measure up in Samsung’s galaxy of mobiles?

Smooth Operator

First off, its middle range position does not speak for the prowess of its performance. Boasting a massive 6GB RAM, the Galaxy C9 Pro stands above all its 4GB predecessors (including top-tier flagship models). This means that apps launch in a jiffy, multitasking is but a breeze and gamers can rejoice over the blessing of zero lag during gameplay.

Storage capacity does not disappoint either. With 64GB built-in and 256GB in expandable storage with a microSD card, insufficient memory should be a thing of the past. And if digital hoarding is your vice, the C9 runs Android OS 6.0.1 Marshmallow out of the box that supports Samsung Cloud storage.

Stamina is tip-top thanks to the 4,000 mAh battery. After a full day of use, recharge from 10% to 100% in under 90 minutes via a Type-C connector. Fret not about all those old microUSB cables, an adaptor promises a snug fit.

Full Specs = Full Spectrum?

A 6-inch screen will be a complete waste if visual indulgence was not the motive. Luckily, Samsung has always banked on the quality of their displays and this one proves no different. Colours are rich and the graphics crisp. Having wide viewing angles that allow full appreciation—from the depths of the blacks to the ephemeral white mist that floats over the most dramatic scenes of the films you will surely stream—would undoubtedly grow on you.

Every device has its flaws and not every feature passed with flying colours, unfortunately. An obvious selling point of the Galaxy C9 Pro is the impressive 16MP front camera. And although it took Insta-worthy selfies under clear skies, in less than stellar lighting conditions, images appeared slightly grainy and the colour processing lacked refinement. On the flip side, the large f/1.9 aperture does compensate by delivering brighter images sans flash. The rear camera of the same megapixel count did the lens far more justice. Skin tones are true to life and landscapes turned out verdant and punchy.

Make a sound choice

Ticking one more of our boxes is the the sound quality put forth by the stereo speakers. The Galaxy C9 Pro arguably offers the best sound of any Samsung device to date. An added plus: The earpiece serves as the second speaker when not on call mode; hence directing sound towards the listener unlike that from bottom-firing grilles.

All said, picking the Samsung Galaxy C9 Pro would constitute a very sound choice if you are after a solid smartphone with a generous display that pushes all the right buttons without the extra fluff and kinks in an edgier device.

The Samsung Galaxy C9 Pro is available in stores nationwide and retails at RM2,299 including GST. For more information and the full specifications, visit www.samsung.com/my.
