Savouring authentic Chiu Chow cuisine in the heart of KL

Seeking out authentic Chiu Chow (Teochew) cuisine around here is no easy feat, but nestled in the heart of Feast Village, Starhill Gallery is where you’ll find Pak Loh Chiu Chow—a restaurant serving up the most authentic Chiu Chow cuisine in town.  Chef Alex Au, who has been with the restaurant since it first established here 10 years ago, will be introducing 40 new Chiu Chow dishes this 5 December. Chef Alex was recently named one of Asia’s Top 20 Chefs, so rest assured you’ll be in for a sumptuous feast as you savour a wealth of flavours associated with China’s gastronomical capital province of Guangdong Province right here in KL.

The new menu at Pak Loh Chiu Chow is to include a myriad of dishes such as refreshing soups, chicken, beef, pork, seafood, medicinal bird’s nest, rice, porridge, noodles and desserts. To get a taste of what’s to come, we were invited to an exclusive luncheon to sample a selection of 10 new dishes—I think it is safe to say we all came out happy campers that day.

One of the highlights of the day was the Authentic Sliced Top Shell with Preserved Vegetables. In Pak Loh Chiu Chow’s kitchen, precision is of top priority. To bring out the best flavours, the top shells were butterflied then pan seared at exactly 60 Celsius for 5 seconds, the result was a stir-fry dish with the perfect balance of taste and texture—you get the fresh, juicy taste from the top shells alongside a slight crunch and enriching flavours courtesy of thinly sliced onions and red pepper.

Another dish that earned high praise all around was the Braised Pumpkin Bean Curd with Wild Mushrooms and Dried Scallop. Coming highly recommended by Chef Alex, the house made pumpkin bean curd is a nice deviation from the usual with its subtly sweet pumpkin flavour and silky smooth texture that hits all the right spots. Paired with the wild mushrooms and dried scallop (you can hardly go wrong with scallops), and you get one of the best bean curd dishes around.

Here are some of the other dishes served that day:
