On the prowl: New restaurants to try out now
New year, new eats
2015 was a great year in the books of foodies and gourmands. We saw the opening of lobster great Pince & Pints and Bali-born Mama San, as well as Malaysia's first restaurant by a Michelin-starred chef Babe. And the ball keeps rolling—here is a list of new eats that have crept onto our radar for all the right reasons:
Bounty, The KL Journal
A casual dining gem in the heart of KL, Bounty features a flicker of oriental flavours in the midst of a contemporary European menu. Framed by floor-to-ceiling glass windows, the interior is tastefully designed with art deco furnishings, an open kitchen area as well as a quiant al fresco space. If you're a fan of perfectly poached eggs, this is the place to be—the Egg vs Truffle dish and French '5' Onion Soup will leave you craving for more.
The KL Journal, 30, Jalan Beremi, Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur
2OX, The Row KL
The newest "it" place to hangout in town, newly revitalised The Row comprises of independent local shops, cafés, bars, restaurants and office suites. One of the more notable new eats, 2OX (pronounced "two ox") is a chic French bistro and bar serving up classic French favourites and an exquisite selection of wines. Try the Chef's mum's hearty coq au vin for a hearty dish of chicken braised in red wine, and finish on a sweet note with a homemade ice cream and sorbet.
56G, The Row, Jalan Doraisamy, Kuala Lumpur
Bacchus, The Row KL
If a cosy wine bar is your jam, Bacchus—which means the Greek god of wine—will be right up your alley. Specialising in tapas and wine, it will have you revelling at the likes of the poached egg cushioned with shaved cheese and pesto, braised smoked pork belly, and salmon sashimi with wasabi mayo. And with the establishment being spearheaded by Chef Angie Hiew of Flamenco and Sentidos Tapas fame, the restaurants that pioneered the Spanish fine dining scene in KL, you can definitely expect creations of quality dispensed here.
52, The Row, Jalan Doraisamy, Kuala Lumpur
Mario & Luigi, Lorong Kurau
A refined taste of Italy is what you will find at Mario & Luigi, an Italian fine dining restaurant situated in the unassuming enclave of Lorong Kurau, Bangsar. The interior is simple and rustic yet elegant, with a mini courtyard at the back of the restaurant, reminiscent of the charming laneways of Rome. The restaurant emphasises on fresh and high quality ingredients, churning out classic dishes to give you one of the best authentic Italian dining experiences in town.
No 15 and 15A, Taman Weng Lock, Lorong Kurau, Bangsar
Beauty & the Beast, Plaza Batai
One of The BIG Group's newer ventures, Beauty & the Beast seeks to bring you the pleasure of visiting a bar and grill as well as a lounge under one roof. Beast guarantees a satisfying gastronomic experience with its array of juicy steaks, lobsters and burgers, while Beauty sets the sophisticated scene for enjoying exquisite cocktails and the finer things in life. When you're done with a nice hearty meal at the dining area, simply glide over to the lounge and enjoy the rest of your evening over good conversation and fine ambience.
