#BuroDiningGuide: 7 restaurants that serve up a good ol’ hearty dinner

1. Kouzu

Ever felt like you’ve wanted to order everything on the menu? At Kouzu you can… try. Specialising in Japanese tapas, portions may be scaled down but they’re big on innovation and flavour. If a multitude of small plates fail to curb the voracious hunger within, classic donburis are guaranteed to mollify the appetite.

To try: Beef steak tataki, and stone rice bowl filled with seafood treasures like unagi, ebiko, scallops and fresh shrimp

Address: 18, Lorong Datuk Sulaiman 1, Taman Tun Datuk Ismail, Kuala Lumpur

Opening hours: 5pm to 1am (Mon – Sat)

2. LoKhaba

Comfort food is the kind that evokes nostalgia while soothing the soul. The repertoire at LoKhaba (short for “Hello, apa khabar?”) greets the palate with the comforting familiarity of Malaysian flavours while intelligently repackaging the expected and refining the rustic.

To try: The signature lobster curry, mee kuah ketam and kerutup daging

Address: 6, Jalan Telawi 4, Bangsar Baru, Kuala Lumpur

Opening hours: 11am to 10pm (Mon – Thurs), 10am to 11pm (Fri – Sat), 9.30 to 10pm (Sun)

3. The Tranquerah

A recent relocation from Kota Damansara to the relatively new addition to Petaling Jaya’s bustling band of malls—Glo Damansara—has made this peranakan restaurant just the slightest bit more accessible to its longtime fans and new patrons alike. Authentic Malaccan Nyonya cuisine is their pride; recipes passed down through generations—their secret.

To try: Ayam buah keluak, sotong masak lemak, and aglio olio with cincaluk

Address: LG 09, Glo Damansara, Jalan Damansara, Kuala Lumpur

Opening hours: 10am to 10pm

4.  Proof Pizza + Wine

The new kid on the block at APW Bangsar—Proof Pizza and Wine—has a lot to prove to stand amidst the already formidable cluster of eateries there. But they’ve called in the big guns. Two massive wood-fire ovens will be sending out artisanal pizzas crafted from their aged and proofed sourdough bases, and topped with a generous array of toppings to impress even the fussiest gourmand.

To try: Umbrian black truffle pizza with taleggio, and the pizza polpo di granchio with crab claw meat and herbed pesto

Address: 29, Jalan Riong, Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur (Inside APW Bangsar)

Opening hours: 12.15pm to 3pm, and 6pm to 10.30pm (Closed on Tuesdays)

5. Cerdito

A pork haven in Puchong. Cerdito butchers and carves their meat from the finest Iberico hogs imported all the way from Spain. Menu items echo that melody with mostly Spanish-inspired renditions of crowd-pleasers like ribs and burgers but an Asian spin is placed as a localised hook.

To try: Iberico pork ribs and the black pig burger with a giant slab of Iberico pork belly

Address: G-11, Kompleks Kenari, Jalan Kenari 19A, Puchong

Opening hours: 12pm to 3pm, and 6pm to 10.30pm (Tues – Thurs), 12pm – 11pm (Fri – Sun), Closed on Mondays

6. Hacha Mecha

Yakitori and doburi seem to be the cronut du jour of the savoury world. Almost every other new establishment is dishing out scoops of fluffy, warm rice crowned with delectable cuts and morsels for the ultimate comfort bowl. And while food on sticks is hardly revolutionary, refined skewers of Japanese origins are somehow hard to resist. Hacha Mecha’s versions of both, however, deserve your time simply due to the prestige of the constituents—think Blackmore Wagyu, foie gras and truffles galore.

To try: Truffled wagyu donburi and Bara wagyu foie gras donburi

Address: Unit E-G-08, Ground Floor, No. 436, Jalan Tun Razak, TREC, Kuala Lumpur

Opening hours: 6pm to 12am (Mon – Thurs), 6pm to 4am (Fri – Sat), 6pm to 12am (Sun)

7. Huckleberry After Dark

As the sun sets, the demure vibes of Huckleberry Food and Fare morphs into its rebellious older sister, Huckleberry After Dark. Self-dubbed as purveyors of nocturnal pleasures, their offerings beckon the soul to indulge in the sinful, greasy, and luscious food of the street. Between the burgers, pizzas and hot dogs, along with a cold beer sporting a stack of onion rings—you’re set for a Friday night.

To try: Chicken and waffles, and chilli cheese fries

Address: 2G and 4G Medan Setia 2, Plaza Damansara, Damansara, Kuala Lumpur

Opening hours: 5.30pm to 12am (Tues – Thurs), 5.30pm to 2am (Fri – Sun), Closed on Mondays
