At Paris Fashion Week, it’s expected to be unexpected. The expected: Everybody’s street style and accessory game would be faultless. The unexpected: The sheer number of people wearing hats—and a very specific type of hat, at that. Flat caps were all the rage, expectedly—it is France. But predictable berets aside, the less derivative of said hat type, the newsboy cap was actively giving the quintessential French headgear a serious run for its money.

 

Our best guess traces the leather berets back to Maria Grazia Chiuri’s show last season where the Dior girls strutted down the runway in navy gowns and cosy crowns. The spark that set the newsboy boom off, however, is a little trickier to pinpoint—Saint Laurent, Prada, Miu Miu, all had iterations of it.
