Buro 24/7 Australia’s second annual magazine has an important message between its pages

In the recently launched sophomore edition of the Buro 24/7 Australia annual magazine, a theme of hope and strength resonated through the exclusive feature and interview with cover model and Belgium talent Hanne Gaby Odiele.

A beautiful spread shot by Jason Kibbler and styled by Katie Mossman produced a powerful series of androgynous portraits of the one of the most successful high-fashion models in the last decade. Earlier this year, Odiele revealed that she is intersex and has since turned her painful past into a message of hope.

Buro 24/7 Australia editor Rebecca Caratti said:

“After such a tumultuous year in 2016, it’s become abundantly clear that pop culture, politics and revolutionary spirit are all completely intertwined these days, so I wanted this issue to really tackle some of the important matters affecting our millennial readers, and to see fashion and popular culture as a reflection of our radically changing world.

“In our second magazine we feature people who are brave enough to stand up for what they believe in, like our cover star Hanne Gaby Odiele who speaks to us candidly about campaigning for gender issues and shares her personal story about being born intersex. One of the reasons Hanne has continued to be one of the most successful high-fashion models of the last decade is her ability to convey both strength and vulnerability.”

On the decision to tell the world her personal story, Odiele tells Buro 24/7 the timing just felt right.

“It’s not just that I felt ready in my life – it’s that with what’s happening in the world right now, it felt important to share. Through my story, I can be a voice for a community that has been left in the dark.”

She adds that while she has fully embraced her role as advocate, she by no means stepping away from her career as a model. “This past fashion week felt more rewarding than ever, and in general my work feels more rewarding now. Before it felt a little more self-serving, and now there’s more purpose behind it.”
