What makes an iconic winning photograph?

It goes without saying that National Geographic is an icon in the world of photography. So it’s only natural that their photo contests would be highly coveted for recognition from the top figures in this industry. As the National Geographic Photo Contest 2015 just recently wrapped up, the judges selected a photo of an anti-cyclonic tornado by James Smart as the grand prize winner.

With over 13,000 entries submitted from both amateur and professional photographers from around the world, you can bet that selecting just one grand winner and other honourable mentions would be quite a daunting task. In this video, three judges reveal what they essentially look for when finding the perfect photo and finding those that stand out among thousands of others:
