Buro Culture Guide: Local art and music events happening in October

7 October, Forests @ Live Fact, 8pm

The Taiwanese electronic-slash-experimental rock band Forests will be taking over Live Fact for a special showcase this Friday. Pop by and kick-start your weekend right with a night of thumping, krautrock sounds.

8 October, Kaki Bakar film screening @ Ilham Gallery, 3-5pm

Kaki Bakar, an adaptation of William Faulkner’s Barn Burning, was first screened at the Cannes Film Festival in 1995. This Saturday, director U-Wei Haji Saari will be present at the screening to give an introduction to the film, which will follow with a Q&A session.

8 October, KL Zine Fest x KL Indie Comics x Distro Day Out @ Awegallery, 10am-7pm

A 3-in-1 event extravaganza for zinesters, crafters, poets, musicians and artists, there’ll be zine discussions, readings, music performances, and a group art exhibition on display—that is almost your whole Saturday sorted out!

8 October, H-Artistry @ Malaysia International Exhibition & Convention Centre

The H-Artistry party is going down this Saturday at MIECC @ Mines Resort City, and it is a by invitation only event. But fret not if you didn’t get an invite, you’ll be able to stream the high energy music event featuring HyunA, Tinashe and curated experiences on their website.

9 October, The Bee presents Rock & Roll Blowout! @ The Bee, Publika, 3pm-12am

The Bee is celebrating their sixth anniversary, and they are going all out with an all-day affair with great music, food and a whole lot of fun. There will be a pop-up barbershop, games, and performances by the likes of Golden Mammoth and Kugiran D’Tepi Pantai.

14-16 October, KL Eco Film Festival 2016 @ Publika

Malaysia’s first and longest-running environmental film festival is back for its ninth year. Organised by EcoKnights, this year’s festival at Publika will feature a range of eco arts and performances, talks, workshops, green market exhibitions, and up to 85 eco film screenings.

20-23 October, ’16-Bit Coriolanus’ @ KLPAC

Part of the Shakespeare 400 Festival by The Actors Studio Seni Teater Rakyat, 16-Bit Coriolanus is a tribute to the great playwright presented through the nostalgic lens of retro video games—hence the “16-Bit” in the name. Expect 85 minutes of fast-paced, animated and entertaining play-making.

21-22 October, Beethoven³ by the MPO @ Petronas Philharmonic Hall, 8.30pm

Conductor Gabor Takacs-Nagy will be leading the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra in some of Beethoven’s greatest compositions. The performance will feature violinist Ray Chen, opening with Beethoven’s King Stephen Overture and concluding the evening with the idyllic Pastoral (No. 6).

22 October, A Pilgrimage to Nowhere: Malaysian Rock ‘n’ Roll during the Mahathir Years @ Ilham Gallery, 3-5pm

In this special talk by musician Joe Kidd, guitarist of one of Malaysia’s oldest punk bands Carburetor Dung, he gives a brief overview on the development of rock music during the country’s reign under Mahathir.

22-30 October, Collecteral by Design Union @ 2 Hang Kasturi, 10am-8pm

Design Union‘s first curated event looks to bring together local designers and the public in an effort to better understand and appreciate design in Malaysia. There will be an exhibition contributed by 10 local designers, workshops by a good reason and The Alphatbet Press, and screenings of design-related documentaries.

25 October, Royal Selangor Design Week @ Aloft Kuala Lumpur Sentral, 8am-6pm

Royal Selangor’s inaugural design conference will feature an exciting series of round table talks and presentations on contemporary design, bringing together leading designers, influential thought leaders and likeminded audience for a day of networking and forums.

29-30 October, Rockaway Fest 2016 Malaysia MotoGP Weekend @ Sepang International Circuit, 4pm-12am

Rock out to the likes of Wolfmother, Scorpions and Artefacts as Malaysia’s biggest rock festival returns with a bang at the end of this month. The second leg of the festival will continue on 19 Novemeber, when Third Eye Blind, Taking Back Sunday and more acts come to town for a rocking finale.
