Buro Culture Guide: Local art and music events happening in March ’17

9, 16 & 23 March, Pow-wow sessions @ Uppercase Bangsar

March 2017 sees POW Ideas kick of its inaugural pow-wow sessions on art and design. Happening after work hours, these weekly sessions will comprise of a series of short screenings, talks, presentations and networking sessions. This month they will be screening Netflix’s Abstract: Art of Design, a new series featuring eight design icons ranging from set to automobile design.

9, 16, 23 & 30 March, Movie Under The Stars @ Frisky Rooftop Bar

Also happening every Thursday is outdoor movie night (with popcorn!) at Frisky Rooftop Bar. The screening starts at 9.30pm, and here is the movie lineup for the month:

9 March: 12 Years a Slave

16 March: The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

23 March: Midnight in Paris

30 March: Unbroken

One night, three bands. Still looking to make after-work plans this Friday? We say getting your fix of live music at ATAS by Bijan FX doesn’t sound too shabby. Rock out with South and The Lowlands, The Propositions and Kaya – a fun show is guaranteed as all of them are known for their energetic sets.

10 March – 5 April 2017. Yu Nagaba Solo Exbition — ‘A Line’ @ Free art space, Lot 10

Yu Nagaba’s distinctive style is simple, fun and eye-catching. His subjects are usually drawn from pop culture of different eras and various genres, from Star Wars to John and Yoko. His drawings are a combination of pop motifs and sophisticated lines, giving the viewers a different viewpoint of something familiar.

11 March, Lovelifest @ Setia City Park

If you still haven’t gotten tickets for Lovelifest yet, we suggest you do – because it’s happening this Saturday! It will be a celebration of local music, arts and life. Plus, you’ll get to watch Yuna perform live, alongside Hujan, OAG, Pastel Lite, Bil Musa and more. There will also be a bazaar, as well as activities like a Bicycle Fun Ride and a terrarium workshop.

15 – 19 March, Amorous Delight: A case of possession of love @ KLPAC

Amorous Delight depicts the complex emotion that is love – the delight and frustrations, the sensuous charms and mad intoxication, the sense of belonging and not belonging – through the poetic language of the body. Performed by the Sutra Dance Theatre, the show and its title derived its nuances of love from an ancient anthology of Sanskrit couplets, Amarushataka.

25 March, Film Screening: Crossroads – Stories of Migrant Workers, Refugees and Stateless People in Malaysia @ Ilham Gallery

A video advocacy initiative by EngageMedia, Crossroads tells the stories of people who have chosen or were forced to leave their homes. It aims to bring the plight of migrant workers, refugees, stateless persons as well as their support organisations to light.

Ongoing exhibition:

18 December 2016-16 April 2017, ‘Afterwork’ @ Ilham Gallery, KL

A major group exhibition curated by Freya Chou, Cosmin Costinas, Inti Guerrero and Qinyi Lim, ‘Afterwork’ explores the issues of class, race, labour, and migration in the region, as well as their corresponding aesthetics and histories. It features the work of artists from different generations, contexts and practices, showcasing different approaches and perspectives of the issue at hand.
