Art and cultural events happening around the globe in May

April 28 – May 12, Obra en Proceso/Work in Progress, Factoria Habana, Cuba

Cuba celebrates French culture in the month of May. In conjunction with the occasion, Chanel presents Obra en Proceso/Work in Progress – an exhibition showcasing more than 200 of Karl Lagerfeld’s photographs. It will be divided into three main sections, each representing a passion of the designer: fashion, architecture and landscapes.

May 1 – 31, Mozart May, Komische Oper, Berlin

As the name suggests, Mozart May is a classical music festival that features symphonic and chamber concerts as well as some of the most famous operas by the one and only Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Held at the Komische Oper Berlin, highlights include The Magic Flute, Don Giovanni and The Marriage of Figaro.

May 11 – 12, Cannes Film Festival, Cannes

The world’s most prestigious film festival returns this month – a glorious celebration of cinematographic art. Every year, the festival showcases exciting new writing, genres, and new visual innovations, highlighting the best of cinema of our time. The red carpet affair is usually a star-studded one, too.

May 13 – 14, Tokyo International Art Fair, Omotesando Hills, Tokyo

In the middle of May, Tokyo is set to play host to hundreds of talented artists from all around the world. Organised by the Global Art Agency, the Tokyo International Art Fair will feature more than 150 exhibitors from more than 40 countries – the city’s largest showcase of modern and contemporary art.

May 13 – June 19, Wiener Festwochen (Vienna Festival), Vienna

The Vienna Festival opens with a free open-air concert at Vienna’s City Hall Square on 13 May. Festival-goers will be able to catch new productions of popular classics as well as premieres of works by international directors. Classical music enthusiasts will also be delighted at the 41 concerts by some of the best orchestras, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Vienna Philharmonic.

May 19 – June 5, San Francisco International Arts Festival, Fort Mason Center, San Francisco

An art extravaganza of sorts, the festival consists of theatre, dance, performing art performances, visual art gallery shows, workshops, lectures and more by artists from Columbia, England, France, Japan, Lithuania, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland, Serbia and Switzerland (phew, that’s a mouthful).

May 20 – 22, Art16, Olympia, London

Art16 unites art-lovers, collectors, gallerists and artists from more than 30 countries around the globe. The annual art fair will present an amazing edit of over 1000 artworks from international artists, alongside free talks, expert-led tours and performances, as well as a revolving pop-up restaurant by Corbin & King, the duo behind the The Wolseley and The Delaunay.
