Wicked the musical coming to the cinema in 2019

It’s been a long time coming given the popularity of the Broadway musical’s enduring popularity. After years of rumour, Universal Pictures has finally confirmed that a screen version of Wicked will be released on 20 December 2019. Stephen Daldry, who is credited for his work on Billy Elliot, The Hours and The Reader amongst others, has been named as the director.

Since making its debut 13 years ago, Wicked has earned over US$3 billion on Broadway alone, making it the biggest hit for Universal ahead of any film the studio has made. So, it is only apt that they bring the musical to the cinema next.

Wicked tells the story of the unlikely friendship between the two Witches of Oz; namely Elphaba, the ‘Wicked Witch of the West’ and Glinda, the ‘Good Witch of the North’.

We are counting down to the release in 2019 but if you are itching to sing a long to Defying Gravity, the stage production will be heading to Singapore this 29 September.
