Make the most of MFW: 5 things to do in Milan

Milan is a city of many trades; it is Italy’s capital of fashion and design, and home to fine arts and culture. Make the most out of your time in this beautiful city with our list of top things to do for the week of 23-29 September, in conjunction with MFW:

1. Expo Milano 2015

Go on a round-the-world trip at the Expo Milano 2015. Themed “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life”, the universal exhibition stands as a platform for the exchange of ideas and shared solutions between countries on the theme of food, sparking innovative concepts for a sustainable future. It’s not all business and no fun, as visitors will get to taste some of the world’s best dishes, admire the beautiful pavilions set up by participating nations, and even enjoy an array of live performances. Expo Milano 2015 runs from May 1 to October 31, 2015.

2. Fondazione Prada

Marvel at the architecture of the new arts centre for Fondazione Prada—an institution dedicated to contemporary art and culture, co-chaired by Miuccia Prada—which features a four-storey tower painted in 24-carat gold leaf and a Wes Anderson-designed cafeteria. Fascinating façade aside, the rich collection of art on display is well worth exploring, including a permanent exhibition by Gober and Louise Bourgeois in the gold leaf clad “haunted house”.

Fondazione Prada is located at Largo Isarco 2, 20139 Milano.

3. L’Elisir d’Amore at Teatro alla Scala

Get your opera fix right at the cultural heart of Milan-the Teatro alla Scala. L’Elisir d’Amore, or The Elixir of Love, is a comic opera by Italian composer Gaetano Donizetti. A grand production of a touching love story infused with hilarious comedy and accompanied by Donizetti’s glorious score, you’ll be in a for a wonderful evening’s entertainment presented by Teatro alla Scala’s very own orchestra and chorus.

4. Da Vinci’s Vineyard

Visits to see The Last Supper have been booked out for the week, but make up for it with a visit to Leonardo’s Vineyard, just across the street from the famous fresco. Designed to recreate the vineyard that was presented to da Vinci as payment for The Last Supper, experts have replanted the same vines in the garden of the privately owned Casa degli Atellani—one of the most significant buildings in Milan.

Leonardo’s Vineyard is located at Corso Magenta 65, 20123 Milano.

5.  Inter Milan vs Fiorentina at San Siro

Built in 1925, the San Siro Stadium is home to two of Italy’s most famous football clubs: FC Internazionale (Inter Milan) and AC Milan. This weekend, catch Inter Milan as they host Fiorentina at the iconic stadium for an Italian Serie A fixture. Feel the thrill and excitement that pulsates through a live match for an unforgettable experience.
