3 Ways to wear the new Nars Velvet Lip Glide

We love a good product that is versatile enough to offer a balance between softness and strength, coverage and comfort. Each of the 13 shades in the Nars’ new Velvet Lip Glide collection is formulated to be highly pigmented and comfortable to wear. Even with its semi-matte finishing, you’ll be pleased to know that it is made to be non-drying on the lips. The infusion of water lily flowers and white tea extracts give your lips antioxidant protection and lasting hydration.

In line with its upcoming launch in Malaysia, we spoke to Jane Richardson, Nars International Lead Makeup Stylist about the new hybrid Nars Velvet Lip Glide. She shares some of the best tips to work that pout with foolproof tips and tricks she has tried and tested backstage during fashion weeks.

Hi Jane, can you tell us what is unique about the Nars Velvet Lip Glide?

It’s a hybrid between a lipstick and lip gloss but you get the benefit of both. What this means is that you get the high saturation colour with great opaqueness while the comfort of the gloss makes it really easy to apply. It has an oil infusion complex in there so it’s really comfortable to wear. You don’t feel it on your lips.

Any tips to make the best of the Nars Velvet Lip Glide?

The high impact shine of the Velvet Lip Glide is incredible but you don’t have to wear it so. It’s a versatile product that’s created to be use on bare lips. When we’re working backstage, we prep the skin and clean the lips by gently exfoliating and leaving a layer of lip treatment on top while we work on the makeup but just before we put on the lipstick, we’ll take off the lip care first. So remember to remove your lip balm before using the Velvet Lip Glide, it’s designed to go on completely bare skin. If you put it on over your balm, it takes on a different feel and we can’t guarantee the longevity of the colour and etc.

How would you work the Nars Velvet Lip Glide then?

If you want to keep it as a gloss, you obviously can. But if you don’t want the high gloss or shine, just grab a tissue and blot on the lips, thus it goes as matte. So for someone who is maybe not confident in trying a bold lip colour yet, you can try applying it in a different way where it is more like a lip stain. To do this, put a little colour on the back of your hands and use your fingers to tap the colour on your lips. We do this a lot backstage, just to get that healthy lip look. Now if you want it to be more defined, use a lip liner after applying the lip glide. Just to get it a bit sharper.

Do you have a favourite colour from the Nars Velvet Lip Glide?

Yes, my favourites are the poppy red of the Mineshaft and the rich brown of Area. I’m kind of this 80s, early 90s girl, so I wore a lot of these two shades then with shimmer (Laugh). I think that’s why I’m attracted to these shades; it takes me back.

As artist, there’s nothing more beautiful than chocolate brown lips but it is also the colour that most women would not wear. It’s the colour that most people would not look at in a line-up, you’ll probably skip it or if you look at it, you’ll probably make an unsure face. Now I know that whenever I pick up a colour and I’m doing that face, it’ll end up being a colour that I really love because it has got a tiny piece of Francois Nars genius in there. So that’s why I sometimes say go for the ones that visually challenge you with Nars because they’re the ones that would actually make you stand out.

What’s one beauty advice you would like to share with women?

I think we need to encourage women to wear whatever. Throw the rule book away and wear whatever that puts a smile on your face because life is too short to be worrying about whether or not you’re wearing the right lipstick. Just wear it. Don’t let it wear you. It’s an empowering tool, it’s sexy and it can tell a story. So I think women should use it for that. Women really should use it to strengthen them and give them confidence as opposed to hiding behind it.
