Tried and tested: Sweatproof and workout-proof eyeliners

Urban Decay 24/7 Waterproof Eyeliner

Cai Mei Khoo, Editor in Chief: I like that the brush is fine and soft for a smooth application, but those who are new to liquid eyeliners might find it a little tricky to apply. The formula is pigmented and needed a few extra seconds to dry, but it stayed put throughout my run so it’s definitely workout-proof!

Rating: 4/5

Chong Yi Suen, Digital Designer: I sweat very easily, I normally drenched in sweat after a good 30 minutes workout and looked as if i just stepped out from a pool. So I was quite hesitant to try this out as I have the fear that my sweat might wash off any make up easily. The eyeliner glides on very easily, and it is very easy to apply. It did stayed put even until my workout was done (phew what a relief!), but the line started to flake off a few hours later, probably due to the sweat earlier.

Loh Wei Yeen, Fashion & Beauty Writer: I’m not used to this eyeliner’s application brush as my regular eyeliner is a pen-brush that’s stiffer, so this does require a slow and steady hand during application. I do love how long the liner stayed on my eyelids though, which is a lovely surprise as I’ve got hooded (and oily) lids. It flakes off upon removal so be sure you’ve got a ton of cotton pads ready at hand.

Shu Uemura Calligraphy Ink

CM: I had the previous version of this liquid liner but never bought another pen as I had issues with application. This upgraded version, however, sees remarkable improvement—colour glides on easily, even though the pen doesn’t have a button (or anything else) to pump ink to the brush and the colour is a nice, intense black. This lasted on my lids, through a 8km run and more. Definitely my new favourite!

Rating: 5/5

YS: I was pleasantly surprised the moment I had this eyeliner on, it’s everything a girl can ask for in a liquid eyeliner! The colour is pigmented, the brush tip is soft hence it’s easy to control the thickness of the line, and it glides on smoothly on my lids with a steady flow of ink throughout. However, for those with combination skin like myself (hello oily lids), I’d recommend applying a light coat of eye shadow on top of it, just to make sure it’s smudge-free all day errday.

Rating: 4.5/5

WY: What I liked about this: the pigmented but not too watery formula, easy application and ability to draw ultra-fine or dramatically bold lines on my eyes thanks to its brush tip. It only had very minor smudges at the end of the day (and I mean 12 hours later, from dawn to dusk) so I’d vouch for its long-wearing and waterproof properties.

Eyeko Visual Eyes (Marine)

CM: I like that the brush was thin and fine and I could draw a defined line with it. The colour was an intense dark blue, which from far looks almost black – something I quite like as I prefer darker liners. The colour stayed put throughout a circuit-based workout but started to run when I took a shower. Would be great for non-workout days.

Rating: 3.5/5

YS: Having heard a lot of good things on social media about the brand, I was psyched to try this out. This isn’t my go-to colour but I’m really glad that I gave it a try! The colour is quite intense upon application, and it does last for a fair amount of time despite being in a hot and humid environment. The only downside? The ink tends to dry out towards the end of the application, meaning I have to constantly shake the pen for it to dispense enough formula.

Rating: 4/5

WY: This is a pretty shade of blue to be sporting if you like coloured liners. It’s got quite a thick formula and dries out quickly on your lids upon application. Despite smudging in a few hours, it’s quite budge-proof and can be removed with an excellent eye-makeup remover. Recommended for smoky eye looks.

NARS Eyeliner Stylo

CM: I like that this liner stays put and doesn’t smudge – I had it on throughout the day for a good 12 hours or so and it only had very minor smudging and no flaking around my eyes. But one gripe I have is that it isn’t easily buildable, so it helps to draw a slow precise line instead of going over it repeatedly.

Rating: 4/5

YS: This liner has great pigmentation, it lines precisely and it doesn’t smudge when i have it on. However, if you’re not a fan of harder felt-tip liner, you might find this liner a tad bit difficult to use. I do find it difficult to control the thickness of the line, but it was easy to apply and it dries up quickly, so a few more strokes on the lids does the trick for me.

Rating: 4/5

WY: While using this felt-tipped liner, it felt as though I was using a brand-new marker-pen as it didn’t need a quick shake to get the formula to dispense. It dried immediately after application so this might be perfect for liquid-eyeliner pros whose precision is second nature. I had minor smudging after breaking into a sweat at the gym – recommended for those who don’t have oily lids.

M.A.C Cosmetics Superslick Liquid Eye Liner

CM: This eyeliner offers a good, intense black but I found the formula goes on a bit too wet and had to make sure it didn’t bleed onto my eyelids – once it dries though, it stays put. Those looking for a finer line might struggle with the slightly thick brush. Liner came off fairly easy by just rinsing off with water.

Rating: 3/5

YS: I swatched this eyeliner on the back of my hand prior trying it on my lids, and it didn’t smudge a single bit when I got home (approximately 5 hours later)! So that pretty much sums up its ability to stay put. The colour is a very intense and solid black, which some might find a little too harsh. The only downside though, is that I find the brush tip to be a little too stiff, hence a poking sensation upon my lids during application. If you’re looking for a bold black liner which stays put and doesn’t smudge, this is the one for you.

Rating: 4/5

WY: This is a seriously intense black eyeliner for those who love boldly lined eyes. It has a hardy brush tip as well for drawing thicker lines. Only minimal smearing or smudging after a day out, but it’s definitely easy to remove as I didn’t need to use eye makeup remover to get it off – water did the trick easily.

Rating: 3.5/5
